Paganica: the Doge's Burgh. The hospitality. How to get there

Paganica is located at an altitude of 669 meters, on a small hill in the valley at the foot of the Gran Sasso Mountain, which has been populated since before the Roman Age, and where other villages are located, such as Bazzano, Onna and, further north, Camarda and Assergi.
In ancient ages, Paganica was an independent "Castle" and Municipality. Today, it is part of the municipality of Aquila.

Paganica is a small town with a historical medieval center, which is more elevated than the rest of the city and is surrounded by an area that is significantly newer. Here, between the ancient narrow streets of the historical center, you can find the tracks of the Paganica's glorious and noble past. It’s beautiful fountains, magnificent noble palaces and churches hint at the wealth and power of Paganica’s past.

As a tourist visiting Paganica and its historical center, one cannot help but to marvel at the unusual blend between medieval architecture with narrow streets and ogival doors, such as the ancient door of the Casa Gotica, and the XVIII - XIX century architecture with magnificent palaces, like Doge's Palace and Villa Dragonetti.
But the tourist visiting Paganica can enjoy much more than its history and monuments; he can also discover and live its ancient traditions, like the San Giustino's Feast and the rite of the "Corsa del Cappello".

That is why the tourist who spends his holidays in Abruzzo and in the Province of L'Aquila, should take the time to visit Paganica, the most important village of the L'Aquila's Commune.

N.B. The historical center of Paganica was closed after the earthquake in 2009 but you can still visit it with a guided tour. We invite the tourist who wants to visit Paganica to contact Abruzzo Up n' Down.
