Camarda is one of the several unknown
burghs which the world forgot and left neglected. The burgh was depopulated
during the XX century, but kept alive its ancient traditions and culture.
Camarda is part of the Commune of L'Aquila
and it is situated in the middle of Valleverde valley. It is surrounded
by several other small villages: Assergi, Aragno, Paganica and
Filetto.
From afar, Camarda comes into sight quickly
with its Medieval Tower, which was used
to defend the burgh a long time ago. Under this tower, an ancient village
sleeps, silently and peacefully, and its tranquility is only augmented by the
murmuring of a small stream flowing close by and the gurgling of the several
fountains. The silence is sometimes broken by the strokes of the old Clock Tower.
Its location in the Gran Sasso National Park and close to
Assergi and to ski resort of Fonte Cerreto (or
"Villetta") makes Camarda a beautiful place where to spend a
leisurely weekend, in the middle of the Nature and the typical Abruzzo
traditions. Walking through the narrow streets of Camarda, meeting shepherds
guiding their sheep to pastures and old women spinning, like walking into the
past.
Every year here through the stone streets
of this burgh, one of the best shows of the Gran Sasso National Park takes place here: the Living Christmas Créche.
